The Department of Laboratory Diagnostics is a part of the University Hospital Centre Zagreb where highly specialized and differential laboratory diagnostic tests are performed for patients from all over Croatia. The Department represents the basic academic teaching Facility of the School of Medicine, Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry, and the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb.
Ever since its foundation in 1980, the main goal of the Department is the application and introduction of recent advances in medical sciences including clinical biochemistry in order to provide state-of-the-art routine laboratory diagnostic services. Particular attention is paid to the continuous introduction of new laboratory tests, regular participation in international quality assurance schemes (DGKL, EMQN, UK NEQAS), and to developing specific fields of laboratory medicine such as molecular diagnostics including monogenic and polygenic diseases, pharmacogenetics, molecular hematology, and tissue typing. In addition, efforts are made to improve sub specialist diagnostics in the fields of metabolic disorders, endocrinology, therapeutic drug monitoring, protein and enzyme biochemistry, and immunology.

Along with everyday laboratory diagnostic work, the Department's employees are actively involved in basic and clinical scientific activities and in under-and postgraduate teaching at several faculties of the Zagreb University and various other universities in Croatia and abroad.
The Department successfully cooperates with eminent scientists and institutions worldwide in the field of laboratory medicine. It has also been the co-founder, together with the Zagreb School of Medicine, of the Division of Functional Genomics where its employees also participate in scientific activities and projects financed by the Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sports as well as various international bodies (FP7).

End the end of 2007 the Department of Laboratory Diagnostics moved into a new modern workspace with state-of-the-art laboratory equipment including automated preanalytical and analytical systems, which allow rapid and efficient laboratory samples and data management. In addition, a laboratory information system was introduced at that time and has been continuously expanded and developed to enable automated laboratory data processing and the connection with clinical departments trough automated printing of laboratory results.

The Department consists of several divisions that are situated in two locations (Kispaticeva Street - Rebro, and Petrova Street):

  • Division of Clinical Biochemistry (located in Petrova street; laboratories for biochemistry and hematology, and for specialist analyses)
  • Division of General and Emergency Laboratory Diagnostics (laboratory for general clinical biochemistry, and emergency laboratories)
  • Division of Hematology and Coagulation (laboratories for hematology and coagulation)
  • Division of Immunology (laboratories for cell biology and functional tests)
  • Division of Pharmacokinetics and Analytical Toxicology (laboratories for toxicology, pharmacology, chromatographic techniques and pharmacogenetics)
  • Division of Special and Molecular Biochemistry (laboratories for molecular diagnostics, neurobiochemistry, protein and enzyme biochemistry, vitamins biochemistry, diagnosis of hereditary and metabolic diseases and endocrinology)
  • Division of Tissue Typing (laboratories for of HLA class I and II serology, tissue culture, new methodologies, and for DNA class I and II histocompatibility).

Three reference centres of the Croatian Ministryo f Health and Social Welfare are active within the Department:

  • Reference Centre for Clinical Biochemistry and Molecular Diagnostics
  • Reference Centre for Immunodiagnostics of Hematological and Immunological Diseases
  • Reference Center for Tissue Typing
