Department of Ophthalmology
The Department of Ophthalmology at the University Hospital Centre Zagreb and the Zagreb School of Medicine is an institution with long tradition and significant authority. In 2008 the 85th anniversary of its foundation and activity was celebrated. Since its foundation the Clinic remained the largest and most renowned ophthalmological institution in Croatia. Modern diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical treatments are performed here, and many ophthalmologists are educated at our Department which is also the centre of expert, scientific, educational and publishing work. The Clinic underwent many qualitative changes, keeping up with the developments in ophthalmology. Twenty five physicians are currently working in the Department, most of which are subspecialists.
Since 1923 the Department of Ophthalmology has been the basic teaching facility of the Zagreb School of Medicine. Scientific research at the Clinic is accomplished through science projects supported by the Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sports. Our scientific publishing activity must also be emphasized its central feature being the ophthalmological periodical Ophthalmologia Croatica.
History of the Department of Ophthalmology
The University of Zagreb School of Medicine started its teaching activities in January 1918. Chairs were gradually filled in with teaching staff and in October Albert Botteri MD, a former professor at the Ljubljana School of Medicine, was appointed professor of ophthalmology. The first lectures in ophthalmology were held in the academic year 1921/22.
In the year 1922 the government decided to relocate the Department of Ophthalmology to the civic school building in the former Marulić Street.
The first patient was admitted in the early 1923 after adaptations according to the project of prof. Botteri had been carried out. In 1946 the Department of Ophthalmology was relocated to the former Rebro Trust Hospital.
Department of Ophthalmology
Structure
Division of Diseases and Surgery of the Anterior Eye Segment
The Division consists of the Unit for Lens Surgery and the Unit for Corneal Surgery.
Surgical and conservative treatment of the anterior eye segment (conjunctiva, sclera, cornea and lens) diseases and trauma is conducted within the Division. Treatment includes corneal transplantations and cataract surgery using ultrasound (phacoemulsification).
Approximately 2000 surgeries are performed each year.
Division of Diseases and Surgery of the Posterior Eye Segment
The Division consists of the Unit for Vitreoretinal Surgery and the Unit for Uveal Diseases.
Conservative and surgical treatment of diseases of the posterior eye segment (the ciliary body, vitreous, retina and choroid) is conducted within the Division. This primarily includes diabetic retinopathy, senile macular degeneration, trauma to the posterior eye segment and tumors of the choroid (melanomas).
Vitreoretinal surgery was introduced at the Division 20 years ago and today, after many years of permanent education in the best centres worldwide, it has reached the top on a global level (conventional retinal detachment surgery, pars plana vitrectomy with installment of silicone oil).
This is also the only institution in Croatia where radioactive treatment of ocular tumors (melanomas of the choroid) is conducted.
Approximately 900 surgeries are performed each year.
Recently, new microsurgical equipment was acquired, additionally improving treatment quality.
Division of Diseases of the Orbit, Neuro-ophthalmology, Plastic Surgery and Glaucoma
The Division consists of a Unit for Diseases of the Orbit and Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery, a Unit for Neuro-ophthalmology and a Unit for Glaucoma.
Conservative and surgical treatment of diseases of the eye adnexa, optic nerve and glaucoma is conducted within the Division. Treatment of patients with tumors of the eye and adnexa, orbital surgery, surgery of the lacrimal apparatus, as well as all kinds of plastic reconstructive surgery on eyelids and conjunctiva are performed in the Unit for Diseases of the Orbit and Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery. Our special interests lie in the field of thyroid diseases with ophthalmological complications, blepharospasm and orbital injuries.
In the Unit for Neuro-ophthalmology the treatment is focused on pathological processes in the optic nerve especially those associated with head trauma, demiellisation processes and systemic diseases which may cause damage to the optic nerve.
Prevention, diagnostics and treatment of glaucoma is conducted at the Unit for Glaucoma. Patients who require anti-glaucoma surgery, a more demanding laser intervention or additional brief diagnostic interventions are hospitalized.
Division of Strabology and Paediatric Ophthalmology
The Division consists of a Unit for Strabismus and a Unit for Paediatric Ophthalmology and Surgery. Conservative and surgical treatment of eyes in children is conducted within this Division.
General ocular pathology is included: congenital anomalies, eye inflammations, cataract of different causes, diseases of the posterior eye segment, ocular trauma, tumors of the eye, eye cavity and eye adnexa.
Strabismus surgery and ortopleoptic exercises are also conducted. Due to permanent specialist and scientific education, the conservative and surgical treatment of strabismus conducted within the Division is at the top level compared with world class results.
Outpatient Clinic
The Outpatient Clinic consists of general ophthalmology dispensaries, different services and subspecialist dispensaries.
General Ophthalmology
The Outpatient Clinic includes four general ophthalmology dispensaries where the following procedures are performed: correction of refraction anomalies, conservative treatment of eye membrane inflammations and analysis of eye fundus findings. The findings are supplemented with intraocular pressure measurements, globe motility and pupillary function testing and, when necessary, additional evaluation in one of the ambulatory services.
Outpatient Services:
Service for Contact Lenses
Service for Glaucoma
Service for Perimetry
Service for Electrodiagnostics and Echography
Service for Adaptometry and Color Vision Testing
Service for Laser Photocoagulation
Service for Fluorescein Angiography
Service for Strabology
