The Department was founded on May 6th 1961, and is the leading institution within the Croatian health care system that systematically provides care and rehabilitation for amputees, as well as for those in need of orthopaedicdevices. The Institute's basicactivity is inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation of amputees. The Department has a capacity of 40 hospital beds, and the rehabilitation consists of prostheses fitting, learning to walk with a prosthesis, kinesiotherapy, and occupational therapy related to ADLs (activities of daily living).
Apart from the Inpatient Clinic, the Department also includes an Outpatient Clinic with Units for Orthopaedic Surgery and Physical Medicine. This service consists of diagnostics and noninvasivetreatments of patients with illnesses and the locomotor system injuries, as well as the prescription and application of orthopaedic devices. Diagnostic ultrasound of the musculoskeletal system is also performed.
The Electrophysiological Laboratory conducts electromyoneurographic analyses, tests for myoelectronic hand prostheses fitting, as well as balance analyses on stabilometric platforms.
The Physiotherapy Unit, being frequented by 200 to 300 patients daily, is equipped with the state of the art equipment for electrotherapy, magnetotherapy, ultrasound therapy and thermotherapy. Hydrotherapy is conducted in the pool, whereas the kinesiotherapy and the amputee walking school are performed in the gym.
The Department is affiliated with the University of Zagreb School of Medicine, and participates in the education of undergraduate and graduate students in the field of orthopaedic surgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation, rheumatology and neurology.
It also implements various educational activities for technicians and medical staff in the field of orthotics, prosthetics and rehabilitation technology, such as courses and annual symposiums on orthopaedic aids.
An especially important part of our educational activities is directed to the students of physiotherapy, occupational therapy and nursing study at the University of Applied Health Studies in Zagreb.
The Department is also involved in the education of residents, namely those in programs such as orthopaedic surgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation and family medicine.
Our Department’s employees are constantly participating in continuous medical education programs by attending various congresses, seminars and other forms of professional education. They also participate in various scientific projects.
With respect to all activities related to orthopaedic devices and rehabilitation, our Department is the best of its kind in Croatia, and maintains strong cooperation with similar domestic and international institutions.
